How to Excel in Job Interviews
Top Tips you should follow
An interview is a formal, oral, face to face communication. It is a formal meeting between two or more persons. A job interview is important for a number of reasons, as it can benefit both the hiring manager and the company as well as the potential candidate being interviewed.
Whether it’s a job interview or college interview, interviews can be stressful!
Wouldn’t it be great if your interview goes less stressful? A great Interview can get you the dream job. But before that what makes the great interview?
Here is a dissection of an entire job interview from start to finish, everything from basic interview questions to advance and how to follow up
● RESEARCH THE COMPANY
We take for granted how important is to know the company you are interviewing with. This will keep you ahead of your competition. You must have deep study about the organization.
● PREPARE
Prepare for common interview questions. You can search them up on google and practice answering them. Here are some of the most common questions:
§ Tell me about yourself
§ Why do you want to work here?
§ What are your greatest strengths and weaknesses?
● ANTICIPATE
Anticipate the interviewer’s concerns and reservations. Put yourself in the interviewers shoes and ask yourself why they are not interested to hire you (“I don’t have this,” “I’m not that,”).
● PLAN YOUR DRESS CODE
Check your interview clothes well in advance. Choose a formal dress, whether male or female don’t be overdressed. Make sure the clothes are clean and wrinkle-free. To feel fresh you can spray mild deodorant or perfume. Your look should be neat and clean with well-cut hair and shaved or trimmed beard.
● FOCUS ON SIGNIFICANT EXPERIENCES
Try to focus on significant experiences you’ve had, and what you learned from them. You can also use the STAR method:
Situation (a challenge you faced), Task (your role in the situation), Action (what you did to address the situation),
Result (what happened as a result of your actions).
● PRACTICE= PROGRESS
Practice with family members, friends or mentors. By practicing, you’ll feel more confident, and you’ll be able to think on your feet better. It’ll also help with preparing answers for your interview, and give a chance to choose which experiences you can mention during your interview that will make a stronger candidate.
● BE CONFIDENT
Even if you don't feel confident, pretend you do, and soon
you'll actually feel confident! During the interview, focus on
experiences that align with what your interviewer is looking
for-challenges you've overcome and important lessons
you've learned are usually a good choice. Try to focus on
what you learned from a challenge, instead of how hard it
was. And of course, be respectful.
● BODY LANGUAGE
Pay attention to your body language, so make sure to dress
appropriately, make eye contact, have good posture, speak
clearly, and smile! Try to seem as open as possible.
Show enthusiasm as well and remind yourself why you
want this opportunity! At the same time, don't overstep
boundaries- try to match your interview's pace and energy.
● BE EARLY AT LOCATION
Reaching early at the location will help you to reduce anxiety and it’ll also give you a time to prepare mentally for the interview. If you’ll each the venue a few minutes before the schedule it will give you time to rest and relax. If the location is far and you’ve to travel much just reach half hour before, use washroom or freshen up yourself and you’re ready to go.
● THANK THE INTERVIEWER
This will help you network, and may help you stand out.
Make sure to customize them based on the interview-
mention what you talked about together. You can also
include questions you didn't get a chance to ask, and
reiterate why you're a strong candidate.
● DON’T GIVE UP
If you’ve had an unlucky interview for a job which you think would be suitable and lost the opportunity to make through it, don't surrender! Write a note, send an email or call the interviewer to convey that you didn't do your best in communicating. It depends on the company and you if this approach gets you a job. At least if you try, there can be a possibility. It's better to do something than to do nothing, otherwise chances are null.
FINALLY
KEEP GOING & BELIEVE IN YOURSELF!
"Remember you are enough no matter what the outcome of the interview is, and the most important thing is to be confident!"
● QUICK NOTE:-
1. Sit patiently in the waiting area and put your phone on switch off or silent or vibration mode.
2. Be polite while entering to the office. Do not ask any personal questions to staff members or receptionist.
3. Many companies use CCTV to monitor your personality. The way you react, behave tells lot about you.
4. Keep your answers short and to the point
5. Do not get nervous if you don’t know the answer. It’s okay to take a pause, collect your thoughts and then speak just be honest with the interviewer.
● Key Takeaways are:
Your interview begins the moment you step in the building. Have good posture, keep eye contact, and treat everyone you encounter with respect.
Once in the interview, you'll likely be asked why you're interested in the role. To answer this, think about your past experience and how the role lines up with your future goals. - Don't speak negatively about past places you've worked. Instead, talk about things you've learned.
Practice polite, confident body language. Miming the interviewer's posture can create a sense of connection.
Have a shortlist of questions prepared for the interviewer. Ask questions you would have if you got the job. Even if you don't have any questions, asking a few shows that you came prepared and that you care.
Follow-up with the hiring manager within 24-hours of the interview. This can be a quick note thanking them for their time, or a longer one that elaborates on some of the things you talked about.
